An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
